An Israeli has been appointed the chief executive officer of UK-based airline Virgin Atlantic.

Shai Weiss, 50, will succeed Craig Kreeger in January 2019, according to Bloomberg.

Weiss is the “right leader to take Virgin Atlantic to the next level” and has a “relentless ability to challenge the status quo,” the British carrier said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Hadashot News, Weiss is the first Israeli national to helm a major international airline.

Weiss has been employed by Virgin Atlantic since 2012, serving as both chief financial officer and, since 2017, chief commercial officer.

He was also behind a merger between NTL Telewest and Virgin Mobile to form Virgin Media, and was previously the founder of the Virgin Green Fund, according to Bloomberg.
