Driver of runaway truck that killed 7 sentenced to 4 years in jail

The driver of a truck who killed seven people after losing control of his vehicle near Haifa in 2013 has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Jamal Abu Sayam of Rahat said his brakes stopped working as he plowed into at least eight cars after running a red light between Haifa and Nesher on April 10, 2013.

Police said at the time that the truck’s weight exceeded the permitted 32 metric tons by about 25 percent, turning the vehicle into a “deadly weapon.” The truck was taken off the road due to a violation only days prior to the crash, they added.
