Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan uses the recent appointment of Meretz MK Ghaida Rinawie Zoabi to become consul general in Shanghai to dismiss claims that Israel is an apartheid state.
“Can any decent person justify associating Israel with this most horrific form of discrimination?” Erdan says in his speech during the monthly UN Security Council session on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
His remarks came hours after Likud chair Benjamin Netanyahu blasted “Zoabi’s” appointment as scandalous and called on the government to cancel it. He claimed Zoabi refuses to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state. Pressed on the claim, the Meretz MK said she swore her allegiance to the Jewish and democratic state of Israel upon entering the Knesset last year.
