Hamas: Rocket fire to continue during ceasefire talks

Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas’s official Gaza spokesman, offers the first statement from the organization as the ceasefire brokered by Egypt collapses and rocket fire from Gaza begins in earnest.

“The Palestinian groups in Cairo didn’t agree to extend the ceasefire, but are continuing to negotiate,” he says in a brief statement quoted in Arabic media.

According to Israel Radio Palestinian affairs reporter Gal Berger, if the quote is accurate, it shows that Hamas wants to achieve its original goal of negotiating the ceasefire while continuing to fire rockets. Egypt and Israel have demanded that rocket fire ends before ceasefire talks begin, and Hamas now appears to be trying to reverse that.
