IDF intercepts arms-smuggling drone from Egypt carrying 20 rifles

The IDF says troops intercepted an arms-smuggling drone that crossed into Israeli territory overnight.

According to the IDF, the drone was detected by the air force’s aerial control center after entering Israel from Egypt.

Forces on the ground then intercepted the aircraft, which was found to be carrying 20 M-16 rifles, along with accessories for additional weapons.

The seized weapons were transferred to security forces for further investigation and handling, the military says.

The interception is part of a broader effort in recent weeks by the IDF’s 80th “Edom” Division, in cooperation with the air force, to counter a surge in drone-based smuggling attempts along the Egyptian border. Over the past two weeks, more than 20 such attempts have been thwarted.

The interception marks the second time the IDF has employed its newly established aerial control centers. The first occurred last week, when two drones were intercepted by an IAF helicopter after being detected using intelligence from the centers — an incident that a senior air force official said underscored a broader shift in Israel’s border-defense approach amid a growing use of drones to smuggle weapons across the border.

The IDF’s Southern Command continues to adapt and expand its operational response in the sector, including by deploying attack helicopters, alongside other capabilities, while Paran Regional Brigade forces carry out extensive ground operations to strengthen defenses along the western border.
