The Histadrut federation declares a labor dispute in the aviation sector in protest of a plan to allow Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air to establish a local operating base in Israel.
The labor union says the move is advancing without consultation, coordination, or cooperation with workers or their representatives, and poses a risk to job security and the stability of the aviation sector.
The declaration of a labor dispute means that organizational action could be taken within two weeks unless an agreement is reached. The dispute applies to more than 11,000 workers in the aviation industry, including employees at Israeli airlines El Al, Arkia, Israir, and Air Haifa, as well as those of the Israel Airports Authority, which operates Ben Gurion, Ramon and Haifa airports.
Late last year, Wizz Air said it was committed to setting up an operational aviation base in Israel as early as March or April, pending regulatory and government approvals. The move is slated to boost competition and bring down sky-high fares for travelers.
