Netanyahu said to ask Haredi allies to drop demand for override law

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked his ultra-Orthodox allies to publicly announce they are dropping their demand for the passage of the so-called override clause as part of legislation shielding members of their community from military conscription, the Kan public broadcaster reports.

According to the broadcaster, Netanyahu said he did not want to further fan tensions, but some of his interlocutors were fiercely opposed.

Netanyahu has declared publicly that his coalition will not advance a bill that would shied legislation from High Court scrutiny, but some reports have said he has assured coalition partners the proposal has not been shelved.
