Pope Francis pleads for an end to the Hamas-Israel war, amid fears it could broaden, and calls for more humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Gaza Strip.

“War is always a defeat, it is a destruction of human fraternity. Brothers, stop! Stop!” Francis says after his traditional Angelus prayer at Saint Peter’s Square in Rome.

“I renew my call for spaces to be opened, for humanitarian aid to continue to arrive, and for hostages to be freed,” the 86-year-old pontiff says. “War, any war that there is in the world — I also think of tormented Ukraine — is a defeat.”
