Shin Bet: Terror cell planned abductions to facilitate prisoner swap

Group made up of Palestinians from West Bank and Gaza plotted to kidnap civilians

The Shin Bet internal security agency revealed on Tuesday a plot by Palestinian terrorists to kidnap Israeli civilians.

The group, called the Holy Warriors Battalion and made up of residents of Gaza and the West Bank, was planning to abduct Israelis in order to facilitate a prisoner swap that would lead to the release of some of the group’s members held in Israeli prisons.

The Shin Bet uncovered the plot and arrested the group’s members earlier this month.

Last week the Shin Bet revealed that a different group attempted on at least three occasions in March to abduct Israeli citizens in the West Bank.

According to an indictment served against nine of those allegedly involved in the March attempts, the cell attempted to kidnap Israeli hitchhikers and motorists in the West Bank. Members of the cell were close to carrying out an abduction three times but were foiled because the Israeli citizens involved acted effectively to prevent them.

Last October Israel released some 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, a soldier who was abducted by Hamas and held in captivity in Gaza for more than five years.
