Media watchdog Keshev petitioned the High Court of Justice to issue an injunction against Maariv and Yedioth Ahronoth to prevent the major dailies from publishing the results of political opinion polls, the financial website TheMarker reported on Wednesday.
Keshev alleged that the papers do not provide proper background information on their polls, such as the number of people surveyed, range of statistical error or funding source for the polling. All of these are required by law, the petition stated, in an effort to prevent polls from being used as propaganda tools.
The petition also charges that the newspapers do not transfer their complete data sets to the Central Elections Commission to be made available to the public, also a legal requirement.
The petition was filed earlier this week, and the newspapers had until Wednesday to respond.
