Rising Israeli tennis player Julia Glushko continued her unlikely run Thursday at the year’s final grand slam, the US Open in New York City, as veteran Israeli Dudi Sela crashed out.
Glushko, who had never in her career won a WTA tour-level match, beat 18-year-old American Sachia Vickery in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. She will face tour veteran Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the third round.
In the first round of the tournament on Tuesday night, the 138th ranked Glushko defeated Russia’s Nadia Petrova, ranked 23 in the world, 6:3, 6:4.
The 28-year-old Sela didn’t fare so well on Thursday, losing in straight sets to the 18th seed, Serbian strongman Janko Tipsarevic.
Sela, ranked 77th in the world, had won a five-set first-round marathon match against Andrey Kutzenov of Russia.
