Saudi Arabia sends military aid to Syria rebels

Arab official says equipment is in transit to Jordan to arm the Free Syrian Army

A top Arab diplomat said Saturday that Saudi Arabia has sent military equipment through Jordan to arm Syrian opposition fighters, according to AFP.

The diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that arming the Free Syrian Army was “a Saudi initiative to stop the massacres in Syria.” He said details would follow.

Saudi Arabia announced Wednesday that it was shutting down its embassy in Damascus.

Saudi officials have consistently called for global action against the Assad regime, and the Kingdom is one of six Gulf monarchies that have expelled Syria’s ambassadors.

Earlier this month, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal publicly defended the right of the Syrian opposition to arm itself.
