A nephew of Shas party co-leader and Interior Minister Eli Yishai was beaten at a Shas election rally in Jerusalem on Tuesday — purportedly by supporters of Yishai’s rival for the party leadership, former interior minister Aryeh Deri — for carrying a sign promoting Yishai.

Ovadia Sha’ashua briefly lost consciousness after being hit in the head by unidentified assailants, according to witnesses, and was taken to Hadassah-University Hospital in Ein Kerem for treatment.

Yishai accompanied his nephew to the hospital. He also lashed out at his nephew’s attackers, saying they were “evil people who are not connected to anyone within the party, who try by all means to harm the unity of the movement.”
