Reports: Settlers assault Palestinian brothers outside West Bank village

Israeli settlers assaulted two Palestinian brothers on the outskirts of the village of al-Mughayyir in the central West Bank, the Wafa official Palestinian news agency reports.

Ghassan and Imad Jaber were visiting relatives in al-Mughayyir and were walking outside the town when they came under attack by a group of settlers from a nearby illegal Israeli outpost and beat them, al-Mughayyir mayor Sayel Canaan told Arabic media.

The settlers held the brothers — who also have American citizenship — against their will until Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene and released the pair. Both of them required medical treatment and were evacuated to a nearby hospital.

The IDF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There are no reports of any arrests, which are highly unlikely in incidents of settler violence, even though they have been taking place on a near-daily basis across the West Bank in recent months.

Colorado governor calls Boulder attack a ‘vicious act of terrorism’

Colorado Governor Jared Polis condemns an apparent attack on hostage demonstrators in Boulder as a “vicious act of terrorism.”

“As the American Jewish community continues to reel from the horrific antisemitic murders in Washington, D.C., it is unfathomable that the Jewish community is facing another terror attack here in Boulder,” Polis says on X.

The attack targeted several individuals while they were marching for the hostages, he says.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says, “We’re united in prayer for the victims of a targeted terror attack this afternoon in Boulder. Terror has no place in our great country.”

A man screams, “End Zionists” in video said to show the scene of an attack on hostage protesters in Boulder, Colorado.

The footage, posted on X, shows a shirtless man holding what appear to be Molotov cocktails.

There appear to be scorch marks on the ground next to flyers showing the images of Israeli hostages in front of him. There are also flames and scorch marks in the nearby grass.

The man also shouts ,”Palestine is free.”

At least one person is lying on the ground as bystanders pour water on them.

A police officer approaches the man, who lies down, and the officer cuffs his hands behind his back.

Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn holds a press conference on the reported attack targeting a gathering of pro-Israel activists in the Colorado city earlier this afternoon.

He says that at 1:26 p.m. local time, police received calls that there was a “man with a weapon” near the county courthouse on 13th and Pearl St. and that “people were being set on fire.”

When police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter, they encountered “multiple victims” with injuries “consistent with burns,” Redfearn says.

Witnesses at the scene told CBS Colorado that the suspect attacked people with Molotov cocktails who were participating in a walk to remember the Israeli hostages who remain in Gaza.

CBS cites witnesses who saw the suspect attack people with Molotov cocktails while they were participating in a weekly walk to raise awareness for the hostages in Gaza.

The victims were evacuated to a nearby Boulder Community Health medical center for treatment, says the local police chief, adding that a number of them apparently suffered “life-threatening” injuries.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, a suspect was pointed out to officers who managed to apprehend him, Redfearn says.

The suspect is an adult male and was taken to a nearby hospital after sustaining minor injuries of his own in the incident, the police chief says, declining to identify him further.

Redfearn confirms that a pro-Israel “peaceful demonstration” was taking place in the area, as it frequently does.

However, he stresses that police are still gathering information roughly three hours after the attack and are still working to determine whether the pro-Israel group was specifically targeted.

Asked whether he would classify the incident as a “terror attack” the way that FBI director Kash Patel has, Redfearn says it would be “irresponsible to speculate on motive at this point.”

The police chief clarifies that if it is later determined that the pro-Israel gathering was targeted, security for it would be stepped up moving forward.

He adds that the scene of the attack has not yet been declared safe yet and that there is a vehicle of interest that is still being probed.

The incident takes place less than two weeks after a pair of Israeli embassy staffers were shot dead outside an American Jewish Committee event in Washington.

The FBI chief says the agency is investigating a “targeted terror attack” in Boulder, Colorado, amid reports of an assault on a pro-Israel demonstration in the US city.

The Boulder Police Department tweets that it is also responding to the attack, adding that there are “reports of several victims.”

One person has been arrested on suspicion of hurling a Molotov cocktail at pro-Israel demonstrators, with initial reports saying at least five people were injured, the Axios news site says.

The Anti-Defamation League says the attack took place at today’s Boulder Run for Their Lives event – a weekly meeting of Jewish community members to run/walk in support of the hostages kidnapped during Hamas’s October 7 onslaught.

“We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado,” Kash Patel says on X, adding that “our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.”

MSF says patients it treated after chaos near Gaza aid site said they ‘were shot from all sides’ by IDF

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders said Sunday that people it treated at a Gaza aid site run by a new US-backed organization reported being “shot from all sides” by Israeli forces.

The IDF has vehemently denied opening fire at Gazans at or near the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s aid distribution site in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

The NGO, known by its French name MSF, blamed the GHF system for chaos at the scene in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defense agency said Israeli fire killed 31 Palestinians at the site. Witnesses also told AFP the Israeli military had opened fire.

“Patients told MSF they were shot from all sides by drones, helicopters, boats, tanks and Israeli soldiers on the ground,” MSF said in a statement.

MSF emergency coordinator Claire Manera in the statement called the GHF’s system of aid delivery “dehumanizing, dangerous and severely ineffective.”

“It has resulted in deaths and injuries of civilians that could have been prevented. Humanitarian aid must be provided only by humanitarian organizations who have the competence and determination to do it safely and effectively.”

MSF communications officer Nour Alsaqa in the statement reported hospital corridors filled with patients, mostly men, with “visible gunshot wounds in their limbs.”

MSF quoted one injured man, Mansour Sami Abdi, as describing people fighting over just five pallets of aid.

“They told us to take food — then they fired from every direction,” he said. “This isn’t aid. It’s a lie.”

The Israeli military said an initial inquiry found its troops “did not fire at civilians while they were near or within the humanitarian aid distribution site”.

A GHF spokesperson said: “These fake reports have been actively fomented by Hamas,” the Islamic militant group that Israel has vowed to destroy in Gaza.

IDF says it killed another Hezbollah operative in today’s south Lebanon drone strikes

Another Hezbollah operative was killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon earlier today, the IDF says.

According to the military, the strike in Ayta ash-Shab killed a member of Hezbollah’s rocket unit.

Earlier today, a member of Hezbollah’s anti-tank until was killed in a strike.

Blasting Israel after West Bank ban, Saudi FM says PA ‘is the rational party in this equation’

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier today participated virtually in a meeting of Middle Eastern ministers organized by Saudi Arabia, after Israel barred the senior officials from entering the West Bank to attend the scheduled gathering in Ramallah.

The ministerial meeting focused on efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan says during a press conference afterwards.

Participants also discussed ongoing efforts to reform the PA, with Prince Faisal hailing Abbas for them.

“The Palestinian Authority continues to fulfill its duties and responsibilities toward the Palestinian people,” says the Saudi diplomat.

“It is the rational party in this equation, facing a party that does not want any solutions,” he adds, blasting Israel’s current government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hamas says ready for indirect talks to resolve ‘points of contention’ on Gaza deal

Hamas announces that it is “ready to immediately start a round of indirect negotiations to reach an agreement on the points of contention” a ceasefire and hostage release deal with Israel.

Hamas says the goal of the talks is to reach a deal that “ensures relief for our people and an end to the humanitarian catastrophe, ultimately leading to a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of the occupation forces.”

The terror group doesn’t say that it has rescinded the updated proposal that it submitted yesterday to US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who called it “totally unacceptable” and asserted that it “takes us backward.”

Witkoff said in that statement that he had wanted Hamas to accept his “framework proposal” as the basis for another round of talks this week.

This was the first time that Witkoff had publicly stated that his proposal was only a starting point for another round of talks.

Hamas in its statement appears to confirm its willingness to hold those talks but does not specify whether it has walked back some of the revelations it issued to the Witkoff proposal.

The primary amendment it wanted added was one that would make it harder for Israel to resume fighting after the 60-day truce currently under discussion, similarly to what Jerusalem did after the previous deal reached in January.

IDF says drone video shows gunmen firing at Gazans seeking looted aid in Khan Younis

The IDF publishes a drone video it says shows Palestinian gunmen and other masked Palestinians opening fire and throwing stones at Gazans heading to collect humanitarian aid that had been looted in southern Khan Younis earlier today.

The IDF does not explicitly say that the armed men are Hamas members, but adds that “Hamas does everything it can to prevent the success of the food distribution in Gaza.”

“Hamas is a murderous and brutal terror organization that starves the residents of Gaza,” the military adds.

The video is unrelated to the deadly incident near an aid distribution site in Rafah early this morning, in which 31 Palestinians were killed according to Hamas authorities.

Qatar and Egypt ‘intensifying efforts’ to reach Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal

Qatar and Egypt announce plans to step up efforts to restart truce negotiations in Gaza, where hopes for a ceasefire are fading amid the lack of agreement between Israel and Hamas on a US proposal.

“Qatar and Egypt, in coordination with the United States, emphasize the importance of intensifying efforts to overcome the obstacles facing the negotiations,” the two mediators say in a joint statement.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has instructed the military to expand the ground offensive against Hamas to additional areas in the Gaza Strip, the military says.

Zamir today held an assessment in southern Gaza with the chief of the Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor, chief of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, COGAT head, Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, and other commanders.

Additionally, the IDF says Zamir was instructed to establish additional aid distribution sites for the Palestinian civilian population.

“We are in the midst of a powerful and uncompromising campaign,” Zamir says to troops in Gaza, in remarks published by the IDF.

“Hamas is losing control. We eliminated the murderer Muhammad Sinwar, and to all other murderers of October 7, we convey a clear message: your day will come,” he says.

IDF denies firing on Gazans at or near aid distribution site, says warning shots were 1km away

The IDF denies opening fire on Palestinians at or near a humanitarian aid distribution site in southern Gaza’s Rafah this morning, after Hamas authorities said 31 were killed and dozens were wounded by Israeli fire in the area.

In a statement, the military slams the “false reports… including serious allegations against the IDF.”

Still, an Israeli military official says that troops did fire warning shots around a kilometer away from the aid site overnight, hours before the facility opened for Palestinians to be handed aid packages.

The official says that “during the night, about a kilometer from the distribution area, and not during the opening hours of the aid distribution site, IDF troops worked to prevent a number of suspects from approaching the forces.”

“During the activity, warning shots were fired at a number of suspects who approached the forces,” the official says, adding that “there is no connection between the incident in question and the false allegations against the IDF.”

After carrying out a preliminary investigation, the military says that it has determined that troops “did not fire at civilians while they were near or within the humanitarian aid distribution site and that reports to this effect are false.”

“The IDF is enabling the American civil organization (GHF) and international aid organizations to distribute aid to the residents of Gaza and not to Hamas,” the military says.

“Hamas does everything in its power to undermine food distribution efforts in the Gaza Strip. Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization that starves and endangers the population to preserve its control over the Gaza Strip. As part of its brutal behavior and its attempts to disrupt humanitarian aid, Hamas directly harms the residents of Gaza,” the statement continues.

The military also “calls on the media to be cautious with information published by the Hamas terror organization, as proven in several previous incidents.”

Ukrainian drone attack destroys over 40 planes across Russia

KYIV, Ukraine — A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia’s territory, a Ukrainian security official tells The Associated Press, while Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones a day before the two sides meet for a new round of direct talks in Istanbul.

The official, who speaks on condition of anonymity to disclose operational details, said the attack took over 1 1/2-year to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The operation saw drones transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, he says. The drones reportedly hit 41 bombers stationed at several airfields on Sunday afternoon, including the Belaya air base in Russia’s Irkutsk region, more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Ukraine.

It is the first time that a Ukrainian drone has been seen in the region, local Gov. Igor Kobzev says. He also says in a statement that the drone had been launched from a truck. Russian officials in the Ryazan and Murmansk regions also report drone activity in the afternoon, but do not give further details.

A ballistic missile launched at Israel by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen was successfully intercepted by air defenses a short while ago, the military says.

Sirens had sounded across central Israel, the Jerusalem area, and several West Bank settlements. Preceding the sirens by four minutes, an early warning was issued to residents, alerting civilians of the long-range missile attack via a push notification on their phones.

Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen have launched 43 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones at Israel. Several missiles have fallen short.

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani condemns Israeli attacks on Lebanon as he hosted Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, on his first visit to Baghdad since taking office.

Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite a November ceasefire that ended more than a year of conflict, saying it is targeting Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure in violation of the agreement.

In a joint press conference with Aoun, Sudani denounced “repeated Israeli attacks against Lebanon’s sovereignty,” which he said were in “violation of international law.”

The Iraqi prime minister calls to “fully implement” a UN Security Council resolution that ended a 2006 war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah and served as the basis for the latest truce, which went into effect on November 27.

Under the truce terms, Hezbollah fighters were to withdraw north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the border, and dismantle their military posts to the south.

Israel, for its part, was to pull all its troops out of Lebanon but has maintained five positions it deems “strategic” along the frontier.

Police arrest two suspects over beating of two Arab bus drivers in Jerusalem

Police earlier today arrested two people on suspicion of beating two Arab bus drivers in Jerusalem last week, following the Beitar Jerusalem soccer team’s loss in the State Cup finals.

The detained adult and minor from the West Bank settlement of Beitar Illit are thought to be two of around a dozen Beitar fans who assaulted the bus drivers Thursday night.

Ahmad Qara’in, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem, had been driving the soccer fans on the 77 bus line from their team’s home, Teddy Stadium, where the game was being broadcast live from Tel Aviv.

“They identified that I was Arab after they spoke with me, and they started, out of nowhere, to yell at me ‘Death to Arabs,’ to curse and to attack me. The whole time, more and more of them were joining,” said Qara’in to Haaretz after the incident.

https://twitter.com/GLZRadio/status/1928201553183125602

He told the Hebrew daily that another Arab bus driver, Mohammad Siaj, arrived at the scene and helped him, but that the second driver was also attacked. “No one was helping me apart from that driver,” he recalled.

In videos shared on social media, fans can be seen punching a driver and throwing objects in his direction. Footage also shows the driver throwing the bus’s small trash can at the assailants in self-defense.

Police say that the two suspects were transferred for questioning at the Moriah police station in Jerusalem.

Officers will request that a judge extend their detention in the coming hour, a spokesman says.

GHF says videos from dawn show nobody hurt at Gaza aid site; AP says shooting incident occurred at 3 a.m.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation issues videos ostensibly showing that no Palestinian civilians were shot this morning at one of its aid distribution sites in the southern Gaza Strip, after Hamas authorities claimed 31 dead in the area this morning.

“As noted in our daily report earlier, aid was distributed without incident. Reports of injuries and fatalities are completely false and fabricated,” the Israel- and US-backed GHF says in a statement, attaching around 15 minutes of footage from the distribution site after dawn.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says the deaths occurred as Israeli forces fired on a crowd gathered at the aid site.

AP cites eyewitnesses as saying that the incident occurred before dawn, as thousands marched toward the aid site. Israeli troops had ordered them to disperse and come back later, and as the crowds arrived at a roundabout around a kilometer away at 3 a.m., the IDF opened fire, the witnesses say.

An AP reporter arrived at the field hospital at around 6 a.m. and saw dozens of wounded, including women and children. The reporter also saw crowds of people returning from the distribution point. Some were carrying boxes of aid, but most appeared to be coming back empty-handed.

The IDF said earlier that it was unaware of any casualties caused by its fire “within” the aid site, adding that it was investigating further.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently told Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer that he misread the Trump administration’s approach to the Middle East, the Ynet news outlet reports.

Citing senior government officials, the report says that Netanyahu has said in internal discussions that Dermer did not predict the US stance on the war in Gaza.

“Dermer did not pick up on what was happening, and in the end, they fooled him,” one of the sources says. “He was sure that the US would not oppose us — but in effect it is. He didn’t foresee the change in the US, and he still believes there will be coordination and hostility won’t emerge, even though reality is different.”

According to the report, Netanyahu is very concerned about the “woke right,” which is isolationist and generally hostile to Israel.

The Prime Minister’s Office tells The Times of Israel that the report is “fake news.”

An Israeli official tells The Times of Israel that there is a camp within the broader Prime Minister’s Office that opposes Dermer, especially since he has taken over as the head of the hostage negotiating team.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir met this morning with the families of hostages who were killed or murdered in Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip.

“We are currently operating in areas where the terrorists set out from [during the October 7 onslaught]. We will operate to defeat Hamas and do everything so it doesn’t happen again,” Zamir says in the meeting, in remarks published by the IDF.

“Returning the hostages is before my eyes and before the eyes of all the IDF soldiers all the time, this is a top priority task, an exalted and essential goal,” he says.

Zamir says IDF operations in Gaza are being carried out “in full coordination with [military’s] Hostages and Missing Persons Headquarters [unit]. We will continue to act to return the hostages and collapse Hamas’s rule,” he adds.

Of the 206 hostages who were abducted alive by Hamas-led terrorists on October 7, 2023, to Gaza, 37 found their deaths in the Strip. Some of those hostages were killed by Israeli actions, including indirectly, the IDF’s own investigations have shown.

Saudi FM: Israel’s barring of delegation to West Bank shows ‘extremism and rejection of peace’

AMMAN, Jordan — Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud says the government’s refusal to allow a delegation of Arab ministers to the West Bank showed its “extremism and rejection of peace.”

His statements come during a joint press conference with counterparts from Jordan, Egypt and Bahrain in Amman.

On Saturday, Israel said it would not allow a planned meeting on Sunday in the Palestinian Authority’s capital of Ramallah to go ahead.

A Hamas commander who led the deadliest attack on Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip amid the war was eliminated in a drone strike over the weekend, the military and Shin Bet announce.

The IDF says Khalil Abed al-Nasser Mohammad Hatib commanded a Hamas cell in the terror group’s Maghazi Battalion, which carried out an RPG attack against troops operating near the Israeli border on January 22, 2024.

The RPGs hit two buildings that had been rigged up for detonation and a tank guarding the forces, killing 21 soldiers. It was the deadliest attack on Israeli troops amid the war.

The military says troops of the 414th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit identified the operative on Friday and called in a drone strike, killing him.

Bennett blasts ‘huge lie’ that Israel opened fire near Gaza aid site, though IDF hasn’t issued denial

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett claims that international media reports a “huge lie” that Israeli tanks opened fire and killed Palestinians at an aid distribution site in Gaza.

“We looked into it, at no distribution center, or near a distribution center, no one opened fire,” he says.

The IDF earlier did not deny that gunfire was carried out, but said it was unaware of any injuries caused, and that “the matter is still under review.”

Bennett emphasizes, however, that the reports are “fake” in an English-language video and Hebrew-language post.

In the Hebrew post, Bennett lambasts the government for the fact that it has not provided information to international media about the incident.

“Israel has no public diplomacy. The matter is not being managed,” he writes.

Over the past day, the Israeli Air Force struck dozens of targets in the Gaza Strip, including terror operatives, booby-trapped structures and other buildings used by terror groups, tunnels, and sniper and anti-tank posts, the military says.

Meanwhile, during operations in Khan Younis, the IDF says it demolished the remains of a booby-trapped building where a soldier was killed last month.

On May 20, Staff Sgt. Danilo Mocanu was killed when a bomb planted by terror operatives exploded in a building, which then partially collapsed with him inside.

Lebanon says one killed in Israeli strike in Nabatieh region

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Lebanon’s health ministry says an Israeli strike on the south of the country today killed one person.

The ministry says an “Israeli enemy” strike targeted a motorcycle in the village of Arnoun, in the Nabatieh region, about five kilometers (three miles) from the Israeli border.

Farther south, another strike hit a car in Beit Lif, in the Bint Jbeil area, wounding one person, the ministry says.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has carried out strikes since the November ceasefire on Hezbollah targets it says are in violation of the agreement.

Huckabee says Paris can carve out Palestinian state from French Riviera

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee dismisses France’s promotion of unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, calling the efforts “revolting” while Israel fights the war against Hamas sparked by the October 7, 2023, massacre.

“It’s incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out and present something that I think increasingly Israelis are steadfast against,” he tells Fox News.

“October 7 changed a lot of things. If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I have a suggestion for them – carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation. And I find it revolting that they think they have the right to do such a thing,” he adds.

Huckabee says Washington will not take part in a conference spearheaded by France and Saudi Arabia in New York aimed at promoting a Palestinian state later this month.

Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide after a house fire in the city killed a mother and her young son.

The 51-year-old mother appears to have been stabbed in the chest, says Central District police commander Amir Hetzroni at the scene of the fire, after it was extinguished by firefighters. The 13-year-old child was found without stab wounds.

Officers are currently working to rule out all other possibilities, Hetzroni adds.

He says that the apartment had been locked from the inside. According to Hebrew reports, the unit’s air vents were also shut during the time of the fire.

Earlier this morning, firefighters were able to extricate the mother and son from the second floor of the burning apartment building for first aid. Magen David Adom paramedics pronounced both dead at the scene.

2 Israelis charged for exporting bomb-making chemicals to PA-held West Bank without authorization

Two Israeli men are indicted on charges of weapons transactions and violating defense export controls for allegedly selling and transporting hundreds of tons of dual-use chemicals into the Palestinian Authority without authorization, and while making efforts to conceal their activities.

Yehezkel Moshe, 66, from Moshav Pedaya, is named as the first defendant, and Jihad Wazuz from East Jerusalem as the second.

The two allegedly formed a criminal conspiracy to import thousands of sacks of potassium nitrate, calcium, sulfur and other dual-use chemicals, which can be used by terror groups to make explosives.

According to the indictment, Moshe would divert, without permission, some of the chemicals he obtained as part of a franchise agreement he had with the Amir agricultural supplies company.

He would falsify the documentation for the chemicals to disguise his actions and prevent inspection authorities at the crossing points into the West Bank from identifying the dual-use items when they transported the goods.

Wazuz would bring his truck to Moshav Pedaya, load the chemicals onto it, and bring the cargo into the West Bank with the use of the fraudulent documentation. The chemicals were then sold to various agricultural supply stores in the West Bank “without the ability to oversee that the use of the chemicals would be for agricultural purposes alone.”

The indictment was filed with the Lod-Central District Court, and the State Attorney’s Office has requested that the two men be kept in custody until the end of legal proceedings against them.

The Military Advocate General’s Office intends to file indictments against Moshe and Wazuz’s accomplices, who are residents of the Palestinian Authority.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expresses grief over the passing of Prof. Stanley Fischer, the former Bank of Israel governor, who has died at age 81.

“Stanley was a great Zionist, who did a great thing — a person with an international standing who left everything, immigrated to Israel, and took on the job of director that I offered him,” Netanyahu writes on X.

“He was also a gifted economist. In his role as governor, he contributed greatly to the Israeli economy, especially to restoring stability during the global financial crisis,” Netanyahu says.

“Throughout the years, Stanley represented Israel proudly to the world in a series of senior positions he held in the American and global economy, and in promoting the good name of Israel and its economy,” he adds.

MOSCOW, Russia — At least seven people were killed and 69 injured when two bridges were blown up in separate Russian regions bordering Ukraine ahead of planned peace talks aimed at ending the three-year-old war in Ukraine, Russian officials say.

A highway bridge over a railway in the Bryansk region was blown up at 10:50 p.m. (1950 GMT) on Saturday night just as a passenger train carrying 388 passengers to Moscow was passing underneath, Russian investigators say.

Just four hours later, a railway bridge over a highway was blown up in the neighboring Kursk region, showering the road with parts of a freight train, the investigators say.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes serious crimes, links the incidents and says explicitly that both bridges were blown up.

In the Bryansk region, social media pictures and videos show passengers trying to climb out of smashed carriages in the dark. Part of the passenger train is shown crushed under a collapsed road bridge, and wrecked carriages lie beside the lines.

“The bridge was blown up while the Klimovo-Moscow train was passing through with 388 passengers on board,” Alexander Bogomaz, the region’s governor, tells Russian television.

The Russian regions bordering Ukraine have been subject to frequent attacks by Ukraine since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Both sides accuse the other of targeting civilians, and both deny such accusations.

There is no immediate comment from Ukraine on the incidents, which took place just a day before the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to sit down for direct talks in Istanbul to discuss a possible end to a war which, according to Washington, has killed and injured at least 1.2 million people.

Mother and young son killed in Modiin house fire

A mother and her young son perished in a house fire that broke out in the city of Modiin this morning, first responders say.

Firefighters say they saw thick black smoke emerging from a three-story apartment building in the city. Upon entering the burning building, they found a middle-aged woman and a 10-year-old child on the second floor, both unconscious with severe burns.

They quickly extricated them from the smoke-filled room for first aid, but Magen David Adom paramedics pronounced both dead at the scene.

Police say they are investigating the fire and suspect it was intentionally ignited in a criminal incident, Hebrew outlets report.

Fire and Rescue Service Commissioner Eyal Caspi and Central District Commander Roni Kedem are en route to the scene, a fire service spokesman says. The agency has formed its own special investigation team to probe the incident.

During operations of the 7th Armored Brigade and elite Yahalom combat engineering unit in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza, the IDF says troops located and demolished a 700-meter-long Hamas tunnel.

The tunnel, according to the military, was some 30 meters deep underground. The IDF publishes a video showing the demolition of the tunnel.

Also, during the operations in Khan Younis, the IDF says the troops spotted a cell of three operatives moving explosive devices to plant them. The forces called in a drone strike, killing the three operatives, the IDF adds, publishing a video of the incident.

The IDF says the troops operating in Khan Younis have killed dozens of terror operatives and destroyed over 100 infrastructures used by terror groups, including by calling in strikes.

IDF says it’s ‘unaware’ of reported injuries caused by shooting at Gaza aid site

Hours after Palestinian media reported dozens of casualties by Israeli fire at a humanitarian aid distribution site in southern Gaza, the IDF says it is “unaware” of the reports.

“At this time, we are unaware of injuries caused by IDF troops’ fire within the [humanitarian aid] distribution site,” the military says, adding that “the matter is still under review.”

When asked for a clarification, the IDF did not deny that gunfire was carried out, but said it was unaware of any injuries caused.

Earlier, Palestinian media said some 30 were killed and over 150 were wounded by Israeli fire at one of the aid distribution sites in Rafah this morning. Another person was killed and over a dozen were injured at an aid distribution site in the Netzarim corridor area, the reports claimed.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said that the aid was handed out “without incident,” adding that reports of casualties were “untrue and fabricated.”

The Hamas-run Gaza civil defense agency says Israeli fire killed at least 22 people near a US-backed aid distribution centre in the southern city of Rafah, revising an earlier death toll.

“The number of martyrs from the massacre at the American aid center in Rafah has risen to at least 22, with more than 120 wounded, including children,” civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal tells AFP.

The figure cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters.

The IDF has not commented on the incident. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said earlier that “our aid was again distributed today without incident.”

Greta Thunberg, other activists set sail to Gaza on Freedom Flotilla ship

Climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and other activists set sail from Sicily to Gaza on a ship aimed at protesting Israel’s war in the territory.

The trip is organized by the Freedom Flotilla coalition, which for more than a decade has sent ships to the coastal enclave in declared opposition to Israeli blockades there.

Rima Hassan, a European Parliament member taking part in the new trip, said Friday the operation had “several aims: to condemn the humanitarian blockade and ongoing genocide, the impunity granted to the state of Israel and raise international awareness.”

Another Freedom Flotilla ship was blocked in Turkey in April after Guinea-Bisseau withdrew its flag, and the vessel was later struck by armed drones, according to its organizers.

In May 2010, another, much-remembered “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” organized by the same coalition was intercepted by the Israeli Navy.

After the convoy refused orders to reroute to Ashdod, Israeli commandos boarded one of the ships, the Mavi Marmara, which was carrying over 600 passengers. After being met with violent resistance, the commandos opened fire, killing 10 Turkish activists. Ten Israeli soldiers were wounded during the attack.

Media outlets in Gaza report that overnight, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a physician in Gaza, died of wounds sustained in an Israeli strike last week on his home in Khan Younis, which killed 9 of his 10 children.

The IDF responded to the strike last week, stating: “An aircraft targeted several suspects identified by IDF forces operating in a structure near their position in the Khan Younis area. Khan Younis is a dangerous combat zone that was cleared of civilians by the IDF for their protection prior to the start of operations. Claims of harm to non-combatants are under review.”

Amid reports of large numbers of dead and wounded Gazans who were on their way to a humanitarian hub, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says that “our aid was again distributed today without incident.”

“We are aware of rumors being actively fomented by Hamas suggesting deaths and injuries today. They are untrue and fabricated,” it continues in a statement.

A Red Cross hospital said at least 21 people were killed this morning and another 175 injured, without saying who opened fire on them.

The GHF says it has distributed over 4.7 million meals over the past week, including 887,00 at the Tel Sultan site this morning.

Iran warns it will retaliate if European powers “exploit” UN reports showing it has stepped up production of highly enriched uranium and detailing its past secretive nuclear activities.

One of the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had sharply increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to up to 60 percent, close to the roughly 90% level needed for atomic weapons.

Iran’s total amount of enriched uranium now exceeds 45 times the limit authorized by a landmark 2015 agreement with world powers, and is estimated at 9,247.6 kilograms, according to the confidential IAEA report.

The other report said Iran carried out secret nuclear activities with material not declared to the UN nuclear watchdog at three locations that have long been under investigation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says in a statement he had told IAEA chief Rafael Grossi in a phone call that “Iran will respond to any inappropriate action by the European parties” to the 2015 agreement, referring to Britain, France and Germany. The European trio has warned they could reimpose sanctions if Iran’s nuclear program threatens the continent’s security.

Araghchi urged Grossi in their call to stop “parties from exploiting” the nuclear watchdog report “to advance their political objectives,” according to the statement.

Hospital says at least 21 Palestinians killed while heading to Gaza aid hub

At least 21 people were killed this morning as they went to receive aid from an Israeli-backed foundation in the Gaza Strip, according to a nearby hospital run by the Red Cross that received the bodies.

Officials at the hospital say another 175 people were wounded, without saying who opened fire on them. An Associated Press reporter saw dozens of people being treated at the hospital.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s distribution of aid has been marred by chaos, violence, and reports of gunfire. Before Sunday, at least six people had been killed and more than 50 wounded according to local health officials. The foundation says the private security contractors guarding its sites did not fire on the crowds, while the Israeli military has acknowledged firing warning shots.

Gazan media claims 15 killed by Israeli fire while on way to GHF aid distribution site

Palestinian media in Hamas-controlled Gaza claims 15 people have been killed this morning by Israeli fire while on their way to receive aid from a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution site in the al-Mawasi area, west of Rafah.

The reports add that some 50 people have been injured, adding that those targeted are young men.

There is no confirmation of the claim or footage of the alleged incident, and the IDF does not immediately comment.
