“Raise your voice: Never again Jew hatred” — these words scream today from the front page of Bild, Germany’s largest daily newspaper. The paper, reacting to several anti-Israel demonstrations in the country in recent days, some of which were marred by explicitly anti-Semitic rhetoric, compiled a long list of celebrities speaking out against anti-Semitism.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Joachim Gauck and several senior government ministers are among the VIPs quoted condemning what appears to be a new wave of anti-Semitism sweeping through the country. The list also includes celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment, and even senior members of Muslim and Christian groups.
“Jesus, too, was a Jew — anti-Semitism has no place in Christianity,” says cardinal Reinhard Marx, the head of the German Conference of Bishops. Aiman Mazyek, the chairman of the Central Council of Muslims, says that “whoever preaches the hatred of Jews is placing himself outside of our communities.”
