In overnight airstrikes, the Israel Defense Forces destroys some 15 kilometers (nine miles) of Hamas underground tunnels in Gaza City and Khan Younis, according to Zilberman.
This is the fourth in a series of attacks on Hamas’s sprawling network of defensive bunkers and passages within the Gaza Strip, dubbed “the metro” by the IDF, which have already destroyed upwards of 100 kilometers (62 miles) of tunnels, Zilberman says.
The attack was conducted with some 60 planes, dropping over 100 bombs on some 65 targets over the course of roughly 30 minutes beginning at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to the spokesman.
He says the purpose of the strike, along with the previous three, is to convince Hamas and its operatives that its underground infrastructure is no longer safe and cannot be relied on.
