Israeli toddler drowns during Mexico vacation

Officials are working to repatriate the body of a 4-year-old Jerusalem boy who drowned Saturday while on vacation in Mexico with his family, Hebrew-language media report.

The boy, named as Shalom Saginor, died after falling into a pool at a hotel in San José del Cabo, a resort town on the southern tip of Baja California, Ynet reports.

According to Haredi news websites, Saginor was the grandson of Rabbi Shalom Arush, an important figure in the Hasidic Bratslav movement.

Mexican officials reportedly sought to perform an autopsy, which is prohibited by Jewish law, but the family and volunteers with the Zaka rescue organization managed to get the boy’s body released without undergoing a postmortem examination.

Zaka and the Foreign Ministry are both working to return the body to Israel for burial, reports say.
