Russia, Iran working together to shore up Assad — report

Russia and Iran are increasing their coordination inside Syria in order to safeguard President Bashar Assad’s control over his coastal stronghold, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing American and Middle Eastern officials.

This increased collaboration is “a new complication” for the US, the Journal says.

The sources say that senior Russian and Iranian officials have held a series of talks in Moscow in recent months on preserving Assad’s rule and on the Russian military buildup in Syria, according to the newspaper.
