US officials: Russia running drone surveillance over Syria
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleAmerican officials tell Reuters that Russia is flying drone aircraft on surveillance missions in Syria, apparently for the first time following a rapid military buildup in the country.
The officials are unable to specify the number of drones involved in the surveillance missions or the scope of the flights, Reuters says, adding that the Pentagon declines to comment.
The drone operations appear to be staged out of an air base near Latakia, US officials say. Russia has sent heavy military equipment to the base in recent days.
