Virus czar said to want surveillance cameras to track how many Israelis wear masks

Outgoing coronavirus czar Ronni Gamzu tells ministers they should use surveillance cameras in cities to track how many Israelis are wearing masks in public, the Walla news site reports.

Gamzu, who is speaking during a meeting of the high-level coronavirus cabinet, reportedly asserts there are cameras that can identify whether someone is wearing a mask without using facial recognition technology.

After Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit pushes back against the proposal, Gamzu is said to explain the cameras are only meant to get an idea of how many Israelis are wearing masks and not as an enforcement mechanism. Mandelblit says he can back this, according to the report.
