Award-winning director Elite Zexer has traveled the world over the course of the last year, screening and answering questions about her first feature film, “Sand Storm,” a family drama with universal resonance that plays out among the nomadic Bedouin of Israel’s southern region.
On Thursday, March 2, the movie — this year’s Israeli submission to the Oscars — will be screened by The Times of Israel, with English subtitles and with Zexer in attendance to talk about the making of the film.
It’s the third in our new series of “The Times of Israel Presents” cultural events in English in Jerusalem.

Zexer, 36, was studying science when she fell in love with filmmaking and dropped everything to work in Hollywood. She then returned to Israel and stumbled upon the stories of a Bedouin family.
She’ll be speaking about her filmmaking process and the people behind the characters of “Sand Storm,” a film that swept Sundance and the Jerusalem Film Festival before winning Israel’s Ophir Award for Best Picture and Best Director last September.
“Sand Storm,” Israel’s first all-Arabic feature film, was Israel’s submission for best foreign-language film for the 89th Academy Awards, but was edged out by other entries.
Now Zexer is back in Israel after introducing “Sand Storm” at dozens of screenings worldwide and having won awards worldwide. She’ll talk about the casting of the film, which featured several first-time actors, the universality of the film’s story, and how she came to tell the narrative of a Bedouin family.
Special screening (English subtitles) and conversation with “Sand Storm” director Elite Zexer, hosted by Jessica Steinberg. Thursday, March 2, 8 p.m., Jerusalem Cinematheque, NIS 50 (NIS 60 at the door). Tickets on sale here.
