The Central Elections Commission approved on Sunday evening the budget for the January general election at NIS 246,781,000 ($64.6 million).

The total represents a significant increase over the previous election budget of NIS 206 million.

Much of the money has been earmarked for the commission chairman’s salary as well as to pay for thousands of drivers, security personnel, polling station ushers, security guards and vote counters.

Volunteers are also being accounted for, with NIS 1,320,000 to cover the cost of sandwiches for them on election day, according to Maariv.

The budget approved by the commission is expected to receive final approval from the Knesset Finance Committee next week.
