Rising costs have caused a sharp upswing in the number of people seeking food aid packages for Rosh Hashanah, while donations to provide holiday aid are down, according to multiple charity organizations.

One organization, Pitchon Lev, reported that it had seen a 20-25 percent increase in food basket requests this year, up to around 10,000, as opposed to 6,500 in 2011, according to a Yedioth Ahronoth report on Tuesday.

Another organization, Tachlit, which gives out 3,000 food baskets each month, reported hundreds of new requests for the holiday season, and manager Aharon Cohen said that since the spring Passover season there had been a 30% drop in donations. “There are those who used to donate that are now going to receive aid,” he added.

This year, 43% percent of Israelis have reduced the amount of food they’ve purchased due to rising costs, according to Leket Israel, a group that helps charity organizations distribute donations.

In 2012, Israel has seen rising costs of bread, fuel and other necessities. A 1% increase in VAT (sales tax) went into effect on September 1, raising prices across the board ahead of the holiday season.
