It’s time to head to the box office to buy tickets for Israeli singer Shiri Maimon’s debut on Broadway, where she’ll be starring in Tony Award-winning musical “Chicago.”
Maimon will begin appearing in the long-running play from September 21 at New York’s Ambassador Theater.
She’ll be playing the role of Roxie Hart, the nightclub dancer who murders her philandering lover and winds up with a slick Chicago lawyer in a fight of fame and celebrity.
Maimon said she was proud to bring an Israeli presence to Broadway, an opportunity that she doesn’t take for granted. She said she’ll be returning regularly to Israel to perform for her beloved audiences in her scheduled shows.
The 36-year-old pop star, who made her way to stardom by way of the first season of “Kochav Nolad,” the Israeli version of “American Idol,” first came onstage with the IDF entertainment troupe. Her appearance in “Kochav Nolad” was followed by a series of albums and an appearance at the 2015 Eurovision in Kiev.
She is now one of the judges on “The X Factor Israel,” and recently starred in “Evita” at Habima in Tel Aviv, where the Broadway producers caught a glimpse of her.
