PA chief Abbas agrees to Palestinian reconciliation talks in Cairo

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian Intelligence chief Abbas Kamel agree to hold a series of pan-Palestinian talks in Cairo, Egyptian government media says.

The leaders of all major Palestinian factions will participate in the talks “as part of Egypt’s efforts in support of unifying the Palestinian position,” says Egyptian official media.

Egypt has long presented itself as the gateway to Palestinian reconciliation. Palestinian politics have been divided since 2007 between Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Fatah, which controls the West Bank.

Both major Palestinian movements have ties to Egypt, which has hosted numerous rounds of negotiations seeking to end the rift. All have come to naught.
