Sweden has named a “special envoy” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict amid signals that Washington may retreat from international support for a two-state solution.
“This year marks 50 years of the occupation of Palestine. Sweden continues to work for a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and will appoint a special envoy,” Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom declares during a parliamentary debate on foreign affairs.
“When I visited Palestine in December it was noticeable that hope can turn to despair, and this features heavily in the consultations that Sweden is holding with almost 150 Israeli and Palestinian civil society organizations,” she says.
UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which harshly condemned Israeli West Bank settlements, and the international peace summit held in Paris last month “could, in the best-case scenario, create the conditions for a renewed peace process and a two-state solution,” Wallstrom says.
