The Ramle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced convicted serial rapist Benny Sela to an additional two years in prison for an indecent act performed in front of a female prison warden.

Sela is already serving some 40 years in prison for some two dozen rapes and other offenses.

According to court papers, the incident happened in 2017 when Sela was being held in the Ramle court’s cells waiting for a verdict in another case, where he also performed an indecent act in front of a prison guard.

The guard noticed that Sela was watching her while exposing himself and committing an indecent act. Sela denied the charges.

In addition to the extra time, Sela was also ordered to pay the guard NIS 5,000 ($1,630) in compensation.

Sela’s attorney from the public defender’s office, Itay Bar-Oz, said he will appeal the sentence. Bar-Oz said that Sela has in recent years asked to undergo treatment — he didn’t elaborate on what sort — and the Prison Service has supported the idea.

Sela was arrested in 1999 and, at his trial, claimed his proclivity to rape stemmed from several traumatic childhood incidents, including seeing his alcoholic father commit suicide by jumping from an electricity post to his death, and sexual harassment by women in Kibbutz Sha’ar Hagolan, where he grew up.

He was convicted of crimes including multiple incidents of sexual assault against a relative of his, which began when she was eight years old.

Sela was sentenced in 2000 to 35 years in prison. The prosecution sought a sentence of 220 years. Early in his trial, Sela asked to be chemically neutered.

In 2006, Sela embarrassed police when he succeeded in escaping police custody in the parking lot of the Tel Aviv District Court. He was only recaptured two weeks later. He was then given an additional four years in jail.

Sela has continued to commit sex offenses after entering prison in 2020. In 2017, he also carried out an indecent act on a female dentist at the prison where he was being held, for which he was given six months in prison. Two years earlier, his cellmate claimed that Sela had raped him.
