Israel sizzles as second spring scorcher strikes

After last week’s round of red-hot temperatures, another heatwave settled on Israel Wednesday, with southern winds bringing hot air from Egypt to push temperatures to record-breaking highs.

The temperature was due to reach 39ºC (102ºF) in Haifa, 44ºC (111ºF) at the Sea of Galilee, 42ºC (107ºF) in Tel Aviv, 37ºC (98.6ºF) in Jerusalem, 46ºC (114.8ºF) at the Dead Sea, and 45ºC (113ºC) in Eilat, meteorological forecasts said.

Israel’s National Fire and Rescue Authority said it has placed 600 firefighters on alert at stations throughout the country. Its 12 aircraft have been placed on alert as well, and the public is asked to refrain from lighting outdoor fires of any kind.

Israel Electric Corporation officials have promised not to cut off the power to customers who have not paid their electricity bills, and added that the IEC is prepared to handle the increased demand for power during the heat wave.

Heavy to extreme heat conditions will remain in force in the eastern part of Israel on Thursday as temperatures begin to decrease in the coastal areas. The heatwave will end with a sharp drop in temperatures on Friday and Saturday, possibly accompanied by rainfall in the north and center of the country.
