Veteran journalist Ofer Shelach is quitting his job as a political commentator and sports analyst for the Maariv newspaper so he can join Yesh Atid — the new political party started by fellow journalist Yair Lapid.

Shelach, who will be responsible for diplomatic and defense policy for Yesh Atid, started covering sports for Maariv in the late 1980s, and began to write political commentary in the early 1990s.

Shelach lost an eye in battle in Lebanon, as an officer in the Paratroops Brigade, in 1983.
