UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging Egyptians to find ways to resolve their differences through democratic means and is appealing for tolerance and peaceful coexistence of different faiths and beliefs.
U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said Monday that Ban strongly believes peaceful dialogue and non-violence are the keys to restoring stability and moving Egypt’s transition forward.
While the vast majority of demonstrators have protested peacefully, Ban strongly condemns the deaths, injuries, sexual assaults against women demonstrators and destruction of property that have been reported, del Buey said.
“The world is watching Egypt, and what Egypt does with its transition will have a significant impact on other transition countries in the region,” del Buey said. “A stable and secure Egypt is crucial for regional stability and security.”
