White House: Egyptian elections plan ‘a positive sign’
Obama administration has yet to determine whether to call Morsi’s ouster a coup, says spokesperson

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is calling Egypt’s plan for elections early next year “a positive sign.”
President Barack Obama’s spokesman, Jay Carney, said Tuesday that the White House is “cautiously encouraged” by the announcement of a plan to return to democratically elected government.
Carney called for all parties to be included in the electoral process.
Egypt’s interim president announced Monday that a referendum on a new constitution will be held in four months, with elections for a new parliament two months later. The new parliament would have a week to set new presidential elections.
Carney said the Obama administration still has not made a determination about whether to call the military’s ousting of President Mohammed Morsi a coup. He said the United States doesn’t want to quickly change aid to Egypt.
