Woman killed in ‘domestic’ shooting at Miami-Dade Jewish center, suspect in custody
Police say a man shot and killed his wife who had brought her daughter to center for swimming lessons; ‘No known threat to the Jewish community,’ says JCC after incident

A woman was shot and killed at a Miami-Dade Jewish center on Sunday in what police and the center said appeared to be an act of “domestic violence.” The center said there was no threat to the Jewish community.
The suspect was in custody, said Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade police, identifying the victim as the suspect’s wife.
“Earlier today, there was a shooting at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center with one fatality.,” the JCC said in a statement.
“Miami-Dade Police have confirmed it is being investigated as a domestic issue. The suspected gunman has been arrested, and police have indicated there is no known threat to the Jewish community,” the statement said.
Thankfully, years of drills and numerous safety protocols ensured the safety of our members, staff, and community,” the statement said, adding that: “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.”
The victim was identified as Shandell Harris, 30.
Zabaleta said she had been at the center for her daughter’s swimming lesson when she was shot by her husband, the girl’s stepfather.
