After cold, rainy spell, temperatures in Israel to rise slightly over weekend

Overnight rainfall causes minor flooding, as strong winds injure two; snow falls on Mount Hermon ski resort; no storms expected in coming days

After overnight rainstorms Thursday, temperatures in Israel were expected to remain relatively cold for the winter, only rising slightly over the weekend.

Temperatures in Jerusalem were expected to be 12°C (53.6°F) on Thursday, while the forecast for Tel Aviv was 18°C (64.4°F) and Haifa was expected to see temperatures of 17°C (62.6°F).

Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat, warm nearly year-round, was expected to see temperatures of 22°C (71.6°F), while the forecast for the city of Beersheba in the northern Negev Desert was 19°C (66.2°F), according to the meteorological service.

No rainfall was expected in the coming days, according to the meteorological service.

By Sunday, temperatures will rise to warmer than average for the winter season.

Thursday saw heavy rainfall in northern Israel, with some 69 millimeters recorded in the town of Merom Golan. Tel Aviv saw some 34mm and Jerusalem saw 11mm.

And on Mount Hermon, some 5 centimeters of snow covered the higher elevations of the ski resort, which was closed to visitors Thursday.

Minor flooding was reported in several areas throughout the country overnight Thursday.

In two separate incidents Wednesday in Jerusalem and Ganei Tikva, east of Tel Aviv, two women, aged 23 and 70, were lightly hurt after tree branches broke and fell as a result of strong winds.
