A man and a woman were killed in a house fire in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa overnight Saturday-Sunday.

The victims, said by medics to be in their 40s, were not immediately identified.

Medics who arrived at the scene attempted to revive the man and woman but were ultimately forced to pronounce their deaths.

Five other people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, according to the Kan public broadcaster, including two teenagers and a 30-year-old man who entered the burning home.

It was not immediately clear how the blaze that engulfed the two-story house was ignited.
