Herzog congratulates Afghans on Portugal’s soccer win
Opposition leader tweets ‘Viva Portugal’ to celebrate 1-0 victory in Euro 2016, but accidentally uses Afghanistan flag
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleLike other politicians around the world, Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog was quick to offer his congratulations to the winning country in the Euro 2016 soccer championship: Afghanistan.
Herzog used an Afghan flag to accompany a tweet reading “Viva Portugal” Sunday night to celebrate the country’s unexpected 1-0 win over France in the European final in Paris.
He quickly deleted his tweet and replaced it with one showing the Portugal flag, but not before it was captured by some eagle-eyed social media jockeys for all the world to mock.
The mistake was an easy one to make, considering the flags are nearly identical, if one just ignores the extra black stripe, the different order of the colors, the Afghan coat of arms and the Koranic saying reading “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger” in Arabic on the Afghan banner.

One commentator offered an image of the Iceland flag for Herzog to use when offering his commiserations to France, while another expressed amazement that Herzog, seen as something of the Screech Powers of Israeli politics, was up so late.
One tweeter wondered whether Herzog would accidentally make an official visit to Afghanistan instead of Portugal if elected prime minister.
With Herzog barely able to maintain control of his Labor Party and Zionist Union faction, though, that’s one worry Israel may not immediately have to worry about.
