Jerusalem mayor says rioters broke his windshield during visit to Haredi neighborhood

Ultra-Orthodox rioters threw stones at the vehicle of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion as he paid a visit to the Haredi neighborhood of Mea Shearim on Monday, his office said.

The rocks smashed Lion’s rear windshield, but the mayor was not harmed, and the visit was able to proceed as planned, his office added.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, according to the mayor’s office.

It was not clear what set off the rioters, and there was no immediate footage available showing the damage to Lion’s car.

It was the latest attack on an elected official by ultra-Orthodox extremists in recent weeks.

Last week, a group of Haredi extremists opposed to any conscription of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students demonstrated inside the apartment building where Shas MK Yinon Azoulay lives in the southern city of Ashdod.

Video taken by Azoulay’s neighbor showed at least eight protesters, including young boys, yelling and banging on his door as she confronted them, telling them to leave. They could be seen ignoring the neighbor and continuing to chant “traitor” as she told them she had called the police.

Days earlier, two other Haredi MKs were attacked in separate incidents, while others received threats.

In the first incident, extremists smashed a window of Shas MK Yoav Ben-Tzur’s vehicle as he left a weekly Torah lesson in Jerusalem. Later that night, dozens of Haredi demonstrators protested outside the home of United Torah Judaism MK Ya’akov Asher in Bnei Brak.
