Biden: Sudan’s civilian-led government ‘must be restored’
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleUS President Joe Biden demands that Sudan’s military immediately restore the nation to civilian rule, joining European and UN calls for an end to violence against peaceful demonstrators and the release of detainees.
“Our message to Sudan’s military authorities is overwhelming and clear: the Sudanese people must be allowed to protest peacefully and the civilian-led transitional government must be restored,” Biden says in a statement.
“The events of recent days are a grave setback,” Biden says, referring to a coup that plunged the poverty-stricken African country into chaos, “but the United States will continue to stand with the people of Sudan.”
