Shas chief Aryeh Deri and Religious Zionism head Bezalel Smotrich sit down together as both are reportedly gunning to become finance minister in the next government.

Deri — a former interior minister who was convicted of corruption two decades ago and resigned from the Knesset earlier this year as part of an unrelated plea agreement — has told prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu that he wants to be finance minister, which is considered a senior ministerial position.

Smotrich has had his eye on the Defense Ministry, which Netanyahu is reportedly against, or the Finance Ministry.
