Iran arrests leading soccer player over ‘anti-state propaganda’
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleIranian security forces on Thursday arrested national soccer player Voria Ghafouri over accusations that he spread “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic, Fars news agency reported.
He was arrested after a training session with his club Foolad Khuzestan on charges of having “tarnished the reputation of the national team and spread propaganda against the state,” the agency said.
Voria Ghafouri, one of the most popular football players of the Iranian national team, was arrested today. He was the captain of the Esteghlal team, whose team won the country's league this year.
