Liberman to announce Likud-Yisrael Beytenu split

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman has called a press conference for 12:30 today.

Media reports indicate the Yisrael Beytenu leader intends to announce the dissolution of his party’s joint Knesset faction with Likud.

Army Radio says Liberman seeks to distance himself from the Likud party and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, partly due to the government’s too-soft — according to Liberman — response to a week of nonstop rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

The Likud and Yisrael Beytenu parties ran as a single faction in the January 2013 Knesset elections, winning 31 seats. Liberman’s party holds 11 of those seats.
