The head of the left-wing Meretz party accuses Prime Minister Netanyahu of using the Defense Ministry as a political chip, following a speech in which the premier denounced politicizing Israel’s security.
In a prime-time television announcement, Netanyahu declared he would remain defense minister following Avigdor Liberman’s resignation and said he opposed early elections amid security threats from Iran and Palestinian terror groups in the Gaza Strip.
“The hypocrisy of Netanyahu as he talks about the important of the defense portfolio cries out to the heavens,” MK Tamar Zandberg says in a statement.
“This is the same Netanyahu who just two years appointed to this sensitive position a cynical, inexperience and irresponsible man only for considerations of political survival,” she adds, referring to Liberman’s appointment as defense minister in May 2016.
Zandberg calls for Netanyahu to be booted out of office and accuses him of polarizing Israeli society.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
