Ministers come out in support of Trump’s call to cancel Netanyahu’s trial

Members of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet welcome US President Trump’s call to cancel the premier’s ongoing criminal trial, dismissing the charges against the premier as political persecution against a leader who they argue has saved the country from destruction.

“President Trump is right – it’s time to cancel the trial,” tweets Culture Minister Miki Zohar, arguing that the cases against the premier “are collapsing anyway.”

According to Zohar, who posts an AI-generated image of Trump and Netanyahu standing shoulder to shoulder with a roaring lion behind them, “the president of the world’s greatest superpower, and a true friend of the Jewish people, Donald Trump, is voicing what many Israeli citizens feel in their hearts.”

“The legacy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be etched in the annals of history as one who saved the Jewish state from a proven existential threat and a real danger of annihilation, and as one of the greatest leaders in its history,” he writes. “Especially in these days, when we all need to focus on the return of the hostages and the defeat of our enemies, it is time to put an end to the inconceivable injustice and personal persecution against him – and to cancel the baseless trial immediately.”

Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi tweets that “for all that I would love to see Netanyahu continue to crush the political prosecution in the trial, this show has long since cost us the security of the state.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir says, “Israel is indeed an independent and sovereign state, but President Trump is absolutely right — it’s time to cancel the absurd trial that the deep state concocted in an attempt to stage a coup against democracy. An urgent reform of the judicial system is a must.”

Pushing back against Trump’s statement, MK Naama Lazimi (The Democrats) posts that Netanyahu “is so ‘not guilty’ that he’s recruiting Trump to cancel his trial. If there’s anything that exemplifies to us how an entire country is being held hostage by a criminal defendant — it’s Trump’s announcement.”
