New York State lawmakers introduce a bill that aims to strip nonprofit status from organizations that are “engaging in unauthorized support of Israeli settlement activity.”
A similar bill, the so-called “Not On Our Dime Act,” was first introduced to the state government by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in 2023, while he was a member of the state assembly.
Jewish groups opposed the original bill because they said its vague definition of settlement activity would have stripped nonprofit status from a swathe of Jewish charities, such as social service groups that operate across the Green Line, but did not support settlement expansion.
The original bill failed to pass into law.
The new bill is introduced by leftist lawmakers from within and around the city.
The bill considers East Jerusalem, which includes the Old City, as “occupied territory.”
The measure is introduced during the Shavuot holiday, and there is no immediate response from Jewish groups.
