A photo by Yonatan Sindel of the Flash90 agency shows a missile fragment, apparently a warhead, falling in the air before it struck Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday.
According to the IDF, the Iranian missile was intercepted, and fragments then crashed down, causing damage to a parking lot in the Jewish Quarter, around a quarter mile from the Western Wall and Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on the Temple Mount.
From the photo, however, it appears that the warhead remained intact following the interception of the missile. The missile did not carry a cluster bomb warhead.
There have been a number of cases where ballistic missiles have been partially intercepted by Israeli air defenses. In some of those incidents, Israeli air defense interceptors have hit the missiles but failed to destroy the warhead, which ultimately crashed down and exploded.
