Released asylum seekers ordered to avoid Tel Aviv, Eilat
Interior Minister Silvan Shalom orders that some 1,200 African asylum seekers slated for release this week from the Holot detention facility not to allowed to live in Tel Aviv or Eilat.
The release follows a High Court ruling that their incarceration while the government worked to determine their asylum eligibility had lasted too long.
Ministers have faced pressure from residents in poorer neighborhoods of southern Tel Aviv and Eilat, where most of the asylum seekers live, to expel them from the country.
Asylum seekers who defy the order will be arrested and placed in Saharonim Prison, near the Holot facility, the Interior Ministry says.
