Unknown vandals paint swastikas outside the New Jersey home of an Indian-American candidate for Congress, who happens to have a Jewish-sounding surname.
Democrat Peter Jacob is running against a Republican incumbent who is a supporter of presidential candidate Donald Trump. Jacob blames Rep. Leonard Lance’s support for Trump for the display of hate.
Jacob tells local media that he lived in his home in Union, in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional district, for six years without incident, prior to the two swastika attacks earlier this week.
“It’s very upsetting,” says Jacob, who is a Christian. “It’s very saddening for us to see this.”
Lance condemns the swastika attacks as “abhorrent,” and calls for an investigation.

Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
