Tens of thousands of people attend the funeral of American-Israeli lone soldier First Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli who died Sunday morning in Gaza along with 12 others from the Golani Brigade.
Israel’s Channel 10 reported that some 18,000 people were there while Army Radio put the figure at over 20,000.
Earlier today, the Facebook page of the Maccabi Haifa team published a post asking people to attend the slain soldier’s funeral in the city’s military cemetery tonight. Carmeli was a fan of the team.
“Sean Carmeli,” reads the post, “was a lone soldier and we don’t want his funeral to be empty.” The post invites people “to come give final honors to a hero who was killed so that we can live.
“That’s the least we can do for him and for our people,” the Maccabi Haifa post says.

Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
