The US Senate has confirmed the nomination of former treasury secretary Jack Lew to become the next US ambassador to Israel.

The final vote tally is 53 to 43, with several Republicans, including Sens. Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul, crossing the aisle to vote with Democrats in approving US President Joe Biden’s pick.

Lew’s confirmation was fast-tracked through the Senate following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.
