Parauguay will reopen its embassy in Israel within the next few days, the Latin American country’s President Horacio Cartes said Wednesday.

During a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Cartes expressed his appreciation for the state of Israel and declared his desire to strengthen relations between both countries, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

Cartes, who was sworn into office earlier this week, stated that it was his intention to continue supporting Israel in the international arena.

Elkin, who is in the midst of a diplomatic visit to South America, discussed the threat of global terrorism with the Paraguayan president and stated that cooperation between the two countries was necessary to cope with danger of such sort, the statement said.

Elkin and Cortes also agreed to strengthen the two nations’ economic, commercial and agricultural ties.

Paraguay’s embassy in Israel was shut eight years ago, due to financial strains.

The country’s designated ambassador is expected to arrive in Israel as early as next week.
