Bullets and grenade from 1950s found in Eilat dumpster

Sappers on site to dispose of old armaments, believed to have been possessions of 1956 Sinai war veteran

Police on Saturday found ammunition from the 1956 Suez War in a garbage can in the southern town of Eilat.

In a tweet, the Israel Police said that a citizen tipped them off to the presence of an old grenade, flares and 5.56 mm and 9 mm bullets in a dumpster. Some military bandages, a helmet and army equipment was also found, NRG reported.

Police suspected that the items belonged to a veteran of the 1956 war who lived in the area and recently died.

“Judging by the nature of the items, it’s apparently spoils of war from the ’50s, apparently the Sinai Campaign,” demolitions officer Itzik Azruel told the 0404 website.

Sappers were dispatched to the site, next to the city’s central bus station, to dispose of the armaments.
